Mission Statement

The Mission of Silver Moccasin / NYLT is to develop strong youth leaders who are confident and well grounded with the Values of the Scout Oath and Law.
The Scout Oath and Law are the guideposts by which all decisions are made at Silver Moccasin.
“Strong leaders are not born, they are made”.

We do this by:
Creating a safe and fun learning environment.
Providing real life opportunities for ethical decision making, mentoring, and living the Scout Oath and Law.
Applying all leadership skills taught in Troop Leadership Training (TLT).
Motivating youth to be leaders at home, school, work, and their religious institutions.

About National Youth Leadership Training

Silver Moccasin / NYLT is an exciting program run by the Great Salt Lake Council. As part of the Youth Leadership Training Program of the BSA, Silver Moccasin takes young men who are interested in the furthering their leadership skills. Scouts build upon the leadership skills learned in Troop Leadership Training taught by their leader in his home unit. Silver Moccasin uses elements of the First Class Skills to teach important team building skills, such as conflict resolution, ethical decision making, and how to take a vision and make it into a reality.

The Silver Moccasin / NYLT Staff are completely volunteer and committed to making the course a special experience. Scouts will live in a Patrol setting as part of a larger Troop made of Scouts from throughout the Council. Scouts are challenged to work together as they face different leadership skill tasks each day of the course. The week concludes with each Patrol presenting to the Troop their vision of what future success in serving others means.

Silver Moccasin / NYLT will give any youth leader the skills needed to be a great Troop Leader. It helps to guide Scouts on their lifelong journey towards becoming “Servant Leaders.” Silver Moccasin provides skills for now and the future of each participant.
