2014 Interfaith Hike
The GSLC is hosting an Interfaith Hike on Saturday, April 26, 2014 in downtown Salt Lake City that will introduce participants to a variety of faiths and houses of worship. We will hike as a single group to 6 different houses of worship where we will be greeted by a presenter who will discuss their religion, their House of Worship, and aspects of the Scout Law. The presenter will conclude with a question and answer period. Participants will gain a better understanding of the religions of fellow Scouts and members of our community and acquire a greater acceptance for diverse religious beliefs in our community. Updated Annual Health & Medical Record
A new, simplified annual health & medical record has been released. The form is easier to use and still gathers the essential information making sure our Scouts are ready for their experience. For any and all Scouting activities, all participants must complete Part A and Part B. "All participants" includes parents, guardians, siblings, youth, staff, and unit leaders. Though Part C is only required for participation in events lasting longer than 72 hours, all BSA participants are encouraged to complete this Pre-Participation Physical during an annual physical performed by a medical professional.
Special June Roundtable
Please plan to join us for a special Roundtable focusing on outdoor cooking on Thursday, June 5, 2014. If you have a special recipe or favorite outdoor cooking method, please share it with us. Regardless, please come and sample what others have to share. This has proven to be one of the District highlights of the year.
Great Salt Lake Council Duty to God Initiative
The Great Salt Lake Council is introducing a new initiative in 2014 to help Scout leaders incorporate the principles of duty to God at all Scouting events. As each Scout embraces their duty to God, they will develop a lifelong habit of service. Click here for more information.
Cooking Merit Badge is now Eagle Required as of January 1, 2014
Significant changes are coming to the Cooking merit badge. First, this badge is Eagle-required beginning January 1, 2014. In addition, there will be a major overhaul to the requirements, which will take effect January 1, 2015.
The addition of the Cooking merit badge to the Eagle-required list means that, regardless of when a Scout earned the Life rank or began working on the Eagle Scout rank, he must earn the Cooking merit badge to become an Eagle Scout (unless he fulfills all the requirements, except his board of review, before January 1, 2014).
As for the changes to the requirements, they’ll appear in a revised merit badge pamphlet that will be released during 2013. The new requirements then become effective Jan. 1, 2015.
Scouts who have already earned the Cooking merit badge are not required to re-earn the badge under the new requirements in order to qualify for the Eagle Scout Award.
Congratulations to the 2014 recipients of the District Award of Merit:
