The Great Salt Lake Council

Dear friends of the Great Salt Lake Council,

"We make a living by what we get.
We make a life by what we give."

This statement, attributed to Sir Winston Spencer Churchill, is charged with insight. It may seem odd to some that giving of our time and assets could actually serve to help us realize our best hopes. But many scouters of the Great Salt Lake Council can attest to the fullfullment of those hopes as they see both the difference they have made in the lives of youth and the difference they have made in the council's ability to deliver a program that assists in that effort.

The mission of the Great Salt Lake Council's Endowment is to create a consistent sustainable source of income to secure scoutings future. The Endowment continues to benefit from those benefactors and contributors who have caught this vision.

We hope that through this annual report you will gain insight into the program and facilities that you have enabled, how your funds are administered, and the progress that we are making in achieving the mission of the Endowment.

Who we are

The Great Salt Lake Council, Boy Scouts of America, was founded in 1913.
The Council serves 70,155 young men and women in Salt Lake,
Davis, Summit, and Tooele counties.

Scouting programs include:
Tiger Cubs - young boys in first grade
Cub Scouting - boys second through fifth grade
Boy Scouting - young men sixth grade to age 14
Varsity Scouting - young men 14 to 16 years of age
Venturing young - men and women ages 16 to 21

Our ScoutReach program brings Scout programs to at-risk inner city youth, giving them a values-based experience after school and an alternative to the influences they are faced with every day.

Our Learning for Life program assists parents and educators by teaching Scouting's values and skills in elementary schools throughout the community. We are currently reaching 13,500 youth in the Salt Lake City area.

Our Camping program has over 23,348 youth attend summer and winter camps at any one of 12 camping facilities operated by the Great Salt Lake Council.

Scouting is the largest volunteer organization in the State of Utah, with over
28,934 volunteers working with youth participating in the Scouting experience.

Over 264,895 hours of service were rendered by young men in 2006 alone while earning their Eagle Scout rank, the highest achievement in Scouting.

The Great Salt Lake Council serves youth through a massive collaborative
partnership system with over 200 organizations.

The Council serves youth through an annual program budget of $6 million.

What is the Endowment

First of all...
What is an Endowment?

An endowment is a permanent fund that is invested to provide long-term support for a charitable purpose.

A portion of the investment earnings is distributed annually while the remaining earnings are retained in the fund so that the endowment and the annual distribution stream both grow over time.

Endowments are about more that money, they are about leaving a legacy.

Endowment funds represent the charitable wishes of donors who want to help the Great Salt Lake Council for perpetuity.

All new Endowment gifters are invited to an Annual Heritage Recognition Dinner to receive and be recognized for their gift.
