Brownsea Staff! Click this button to begin your preparations. At the Jamboree, we bring to life the 1907 experimental camp by British General Robert S.S. Baden-Powell on a small island off the southern coast of England that became the Boy Scouts. Little did General Baden-Powell realize that his program to teach self-reliance, observation and leadership skills to young men would become the most successful youth program in the world! Each day at the Jamboree, thousands of visitors experience the actual games, events and activities enjoyed by those original “Scouts” more than 100 years ago. After taking the “ferry boat” to the island, you can take part in the very same games that those boys did: Tug O’ War, Whale Hunt, Basket Ball, Sharpshooter, Flinging the Squailer and Kim’s Game. Or, you can learn the history of the British flag and how it evolved over the centuries into The Union Jack. Don’t forget to see General Baden-Powell, Britain’s famous war hero, address the “lads” and tell them about the events they will partake in during their first day at the Browsea Island camp. Speak with the General, Major MacLaren (the General’s right hand man) or the lads to learn more about this historical encampment. Every morning, under the direction of the General and the Major, the Brownsea Island lads perform an authentic British flag-raising ceremony and sing, “God Save the King.” Don’t forget to bring your camera to take memorable photographs!! Whether you are part of a council troop at the Jamboree, serving on a support staff or a daily visitor, we hope you will stop by The Brownsea Island Experience to relive the founding of Scouting. In the words of General Baden-Powell: it will be “Great Fun.” <><> |
