KENNECOTT BINGHAM CANYON MINE TOUR PATCH

Each Cub Scout and leader who visits the Kennecott Bingham Canyon Mine may earn the patch by completing the following requirements:

 

1.      Sign the Guest Registry in the Visiting Center as a family, den or pack.

2.      Tour the Visitor Center, both inside and outside, and locate the following information:

a.      Name 2 artifacts on display in front of the visitor’s center.

b.     What is the height of a haulage truck tire?

c.      Name five minerals found in the Bingham Canyon mine.

d.     When did open-pit mining begin at Bingham Canyon Mine?

e.      Whose idea was open-pit mining and what was his profession?

f.      What are the four basic production steps in copper processing?

g.      How much copper ore is mined at Bingham Canyon every day?

h.     What five major environmental programs are important parts of the Kennecott operations?

i.       What are copper's two main alloys?

j.       How big is the Bingham Canyon Mine?

k.     In addition to copper, what other metals are produced from the Bingham Canyon Mine?

l.       How much weight can be carried by the largest haulage trucks?  How much can the largest shovels lift in one bite?

m.   What is a copper cathode?

n.     What was the name of the original company that developed the Bingham Canyon Mine?

o.     Name five ways that copper is used in your everyday life.

p.     What percentage of the copper used by the Allies during World War II was mined at Bingham Canyon?

q.     Name five communities that were located in Bingham Canyon.

3.      While viewing the Bingham Canyon Mine from the Overlook, locate the in-pit crusher and the conveyor system.  How much ore is crushed daily in the in-pit crusher?  How long is the conveyor?  Where does the conveyor transport the ore?
