White Buffalo District Spring Camporee 2008
April 25-26 on Stansbury Island
When & Where: Check-in beginning at 3 pm. The site is about 50 minutes northwest of West Jordan/Taylorsville via I-80. Turnoff at 2nd Gransvile Exit (Exit 84) then 11.5 miles north on improved gravel road. Detailed directions will be sent to all troops which register. Stansbury Island is a mountainous peninsula in the Great Salt lake which hosts deer, chucker quail, many other small animals, and great geologic features.
Activities: Troop games and campfire on Friday evening; and a variety of group events on Saturday morning. Saturday events will include rock climbing, rappelling, and many other events.
Invited: 11 year old boy scouts though age 18, with an emphasis on 11-13 year-old scouts.
Registration: By email to ksoelberg@utah.gov. Please estimate the number of boys and adult leaders who will be attending. Your email registration will trigger a response to you with full information on location details, events, and parental release forms required for rock climbing and rappelling.
Logistics: The district will provide toilets, but each troop is responsible to bring its own water for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. Recommended 3-4 gallons per person.
Cost: Your sponsoring organizations have arranged to cover the cost of the camp itself and supplies for sponsored group events.
Food: Each troop is responsible for its own food for Friday dinner and Saturday breakfast and lunch.
Equipment: Each troop is responsible to bring its own camping gear, including troop kitchen, tents, etc. Troop campfires are allowed with fire barrel only.
Preparations: Each troop is responsible to monitor boys’ gear to assure that each boy is prepared for a successful cool/cold weather camp. Local Tour Permit is required. High Adventure parental release form will be required for each boy who participates in rock climbing/rapelling.
Full Participation: The district is making a plea that each troop set a schedule for full activity and full benefits for each scout. This means arriving as early Friday as possible, and staying at least until noon on Saturday. Arriving after dark makes camp setup and dinner very difficult. We encourage troops to plan additional activities after lunch on Saturday, which may include hiking, geology activities, etc. Hiking to a pair of neat caves is a fun option. Exceptions for later arrival or early leaving are sometimes necessary, but value is lost when troops do so. Unstructured exploring is a great activity if you allow time for it.
Assist the District: If you would be willing to assist the district, especially with Saturday activities, please contact the email address below. Your support can be invaluable for us and fun for you.
