Special Notice
We have discontinued the Park City Mine patch as you well know – but customers who have our old literature seem to be appearing at the Museum in Park City to do the Main Street treasure hunt. The museum is now closed until May of 2009. If you hear of anyone asking, there is an office in the Main Street Mall 333 Main Street, 2nd floor, they can pick up the paper work for the treasure hunt there. They are open from Monday-Friday 8a.m. to 5p.m. They need to call in advance, 435-649-7457, a $1.00 per person donated would be appreciated.
District Spring Camp-o-ree
May 9-10, 2008 (Fri-Sat) | Desteret Peak Complex in Tooele, UT | Boy Scouts & Varsity Scouts | Registration
UPDATE: Check-in will begin no earlier than 5:00 PM on Friday. We are camping in a designated area near the pavilion. If you have ordered rocket kits, they will be handed out Friday night. We are providing glue. However, you will need to provide means for decorating them. We suggest markers, stickers, or paint. We will have a few prizes for originality and decoration. Please make sure to provide proper supervision during the building activity. Those units that have emailed Dave Madsen about the Miller Motorsports Park tours will receive tickets for a 1:00 PM tour on Saturday. He will also have additional tickets for a 2:00 PM tour. Directions: Take I-80 West from SLC, take exit 99 to Tooele. Now traveling on SR 36. Continue past Lake Point. Before Stansbury Park turn right at street light SR 138. Proceed to Sheeplane and turn left. The Complex is at the corner of Sheeplane and SR 112. |
WOW! Former Senator and Space Shuttle Astronaut Jake Garn has accepted our invitation to speak at our camp on Saturday. We look forward to hearing from him and his experiences.
Our theme is Scouting to the Moon & Beyond. This campout will fulfill some of the Space Exploration merit badge. The Spring Camp-o-ree was originally going to be held on April 25-26, but has been changed to May 9-10. It will have an aerospace theme and several activities and events including model rocket building and launches (for an additional fee, or bring your own). There will also be free tours of the Miller Motorsports Park next door. We will have here the registration information, check back often. Click here for the flyer.
If you choose to build a rocket, you will need to supply paint or markers to decorate it. We will have rocket kits and supplies available at a discount, you will have to register for them in advance.

No Fire Policy
June 19th, 2007 – until advised otherwise | BSA, Great Salt Lake Council | Steve Godwin, Council Program Director
No FIRE policy is in effect as of June 19th.
This includes all Council Camps, programs and properties. Please inform all tour permit applicants of the policy. Please beware that any activity or product that has the potential of starting a fire is prohibited. Please make sure this policy is posted in each camp sight and reviewed at check in and all meetings. Make sure all vehicles are parked where a hot catalytic converter will not spark a fire. Propane stoves supervised by an adult may be used for cooking only. This is the driest spring we have had in years. Lets have a fire free summer.
Any questions please call me.
Thank you! Please forward to all involved.

Internet Advancement
New to the Council website is the Internet Advancement feature. Please contact your local leader (Bishop, for example) to have your Unit Number and Unit ID to be able to login. Also have ready all the details regarding your unit advancements because the only initial data that appears will be the currently registered scouts. You will then need to fill in the advancements pertaining to those scouts.
Internet Explorer 5.5 or above is required.

Round Table Highlights
This month's theme is Environment. That's a broad topic and includes many categories covering requirements for rank advancements as well as several merit badges, not to mention other awards like the World Conservation Award and the William T. Hornaday Award. Time was spent talking about the Hornaday award, its requirements (conservation service projects) and that it can be earned at many different levels. We were challenged to have several of these earned in our district over the next year. For more details see: http://www.scouting.org/Awards/hornadayawards.aspx and http://scoutleaderawards.com/advance/boyscout/worldcons.asp
Recognition Dinner
We also had a successful Recognition Dinner Feb. 29, where seven members of our district received the District Award of Merit. They are: David Farley, Cody Hopkins, Mark Jensen, Lucinda Lundgren, Jeff Maddy, Bradley Peterson and Adelbert Shaffer. We also mentioned that our District Advancement Chairman Leon Oborn was a 2008 Silver Beaver Recipient. Congratulations to all of you and thank you for your notable service.
We're sure there are others out there that haven't been recognized yet. And to help identify them, we will have nomination forms available at each roundtable for you to use. Please submit them now and do not wait. We can help get the background work done for the applications.
New Rank Advancement Changes
Effective January 1, 2008 the following changes in rank advancement requirements will be implemented:
- Tenderfoot Rank
- Revised requirement 9: Explain the importance of the buddy system as it relates to your personal safety on outings and in your neighborhood. Describe what a bully is and how you should respond to one.
- Second Class Rank
- New requirement 8b: Explain the three R's of personal safety and protection.
- First Class Rank
- New requirement 12: Describe the three things you should avoid doing related to use of the internet. Describe a cyber-bully and how you should respond to one.
Scouts who have not completed these rank advancements prior to January 1, 2008 will be required to complete the requirement to earn the rank.
These changes will be represented in the 2008 Boy Scout Requirements book and the revised ninth printing of the 11th edition of the Boy Scout Handbook.
