Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster Training

Sessions identified below correspond to the National Boy Scout Syllabus for Scoutmaster and Assistant Scouter-specific training. The sessions will be taught out-of-order.

Committee chairman and committee members now attend the committee training section rather than the Scoutmaster-specific training.

  1. Basic Training - 4 hours
    Taught by each district for zone training. Includes the following elements::
    1. Session One - Pre-Opening Activity: The Name Game (10 minutes)
    2. Session One - Welcome & Introductions (10 minutes)
    3. Session One - Course Overview (15 minutes)
    4. Session One - The Role of the Scoutmaster (20 minutes)
    5. Session One - Troop Organization (15 minutes)
    6. Session One - Troop Meetings (35 minutes)
    7. Session One - Working with Boy Leaders / Patrol Method (25 minutes)
    8. Session One - Patrol Leader's Council (20 minutes)
    9. Session Three - Program Planning (50 minutes)
    10. Session Three - The Uniform (10 minutes)
    11. Session Three - Other Training Opportunities (5 minutes)
    12. Session Three - Summary & Closing (10 minutes)
  2. Supplemental Training
    Preferably taught several times each year as a breakout section at district roundtable and at the University of Scouting.
    1. Session Two: Advancement (35 minutes)
    2. Session Two: Outdoor Program (55 minutes)
    3. New Leader Essentials (supplement those parts not covered in Basic)
  3. Outdoor Leadership Skills Course
    To be taught in its published format by the district one or twice each year.
