To prevent conflicts:
With Food:
ü Never Feed Bears
ü Keep campsites free of food and litter. Remove all garbage. Keep it in a covered, bear proof container.
ü Do not leave food any place bears can access.
ü Never keep food in your tent.
ü Store food where bears cannot reach it.
Hiking:
ü When hiking make noise to alert bears of your presents.
ü Never approach a mother bear with cubs.
ü NEVER RUN
If you encounter a black bear:
ü Do not make direct eye contact.
ü Stay calm. Immediately pick up small children.
ü Make noise, yell, bang pots or throw rocks to scare it away.
ü Make yourself appear as large as possible. Raise your arms, jacket or other object over your head.
ü If a bear approaches you. Retreat slowly or climb a tree until it leaves. NEVER RUN.
ü Fight back if you are attacked and cannot get away. Be aggressive. Aim for the nose and eyes.
